Summary
Description20160123 Sri Lanka 3671 crop Habarana sRGB (25144296973).jpg |
Elephants in Hurulu Eco Park. The Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is the largest of the three subspecies of Asian elephants but still smaller than the African elephant. Only 7% of males bear tusks. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Sri Lankan elephant as endangered, primarily due to habitat loss. Hurulu Eco (for ecological) Park was carved out at the edge of the Hurulu Forest Reserve, a designated biosphere reserve (in 1977) representing Sri Lanka dry-zone dry evergreen forests. It is an important habitat of the Sri Lankan elephant. There are other protected areas around the reserve that provide additional range for the migratory elephants without encroaching on civilization.
