Summary
DescriptionCentral Gugh from The Bar - geograph.org.uk - 1341831.jpg |
English: Central Gugh from The Bar The high tide covers The Bar.
The second of a panorama of three pictures. I can recall in the early 1960s when this tombolo was entirely made up of sand. Then when the quay at Porth Conger was extended in about 1965 sand for the construction was taken from the north side of the beach. The sea filled the gap with rocks and pebbles from the rest of the bay and they have been here ever since. It is now illegal to take sand or rocks from any beach on Scilly for construction, making impossible to built anything in the Scillonian vernacular style. Even a humble shed is now usually made from breeze blocks or other imported "carbuncle-like" materials. The reference to Prince Charles' famous speech is of course deliberate as he is the landlord of the islands. |
