1. FC Magdeburg were created when the footballing department of SC Magdeburg split from that club on 22 December 1965. This establishment was part of a nationwide attempt to promote excellence in football in East Germany: Along with 1. FC Magdeburg ten other so-called Fußballclubs were created. Except for the 1965-66 season, 1. FC Magdeburg competed in East Germany's top flight, the DDR-Oberliga. The Magdeburg club won the league title three times and won the national cup competition, known as FDGB-Pokal a record seven times. Magdeburg are the only East German club to have attained European honors when they beat AC Milan to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1974. After German reunification, the club missed out on a spot in the professional leagues and has competed in third and fourth tiers ever since.
