Summary
Arch of Gallienus, Rome.
The arch was built as an opening in the Servian Walls, by a private citizen, M. Aurelius Victor, and dedicated to emperor Gallienus, in AD 262. The legend on the arch, on two lines, reads:
- GALLIENO CLEMENTISSIMO PRINCIPI CUIUS INVICTA VIRTUS SOLA PIETATE SUPERATA EST ET SALONINAE SANCTISSIMAE AUG(ustae)
- AURELIUS VICTOR V(ir) E(gregius) DICATISSIMUS NUMINI MAIESTATIQUE EORUM.
This arch was built over the older Porta Esquilina, where via Labicana started.
