Summary
English: The former main building of the Royal Prussian Maritime Trading Company and the Prussian State Bank at the corner of Jägerstraße (on the left) and Markgrafenstraße in Berlin-Mitte, now seat of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, here seen from Gendarmenmarkt. The building was constructed 1901 to 1903 by architect Paul Kieschke and replaced an older baroque building. Annex buildings are located on Jägerstraße (built 1936 to 1939) and on Taubenstraße (former commercial buildings altered 1924 to 1926 and in 1938). The present-day outlook of the main building is the result of a reconstrcution carried out from 1938 to 1940. The complex used to be seat of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities of the GDR. It is landmarked. |
