Summary
DescriptionDublin Gate 1608 displaying the heads of Irish rebels Cahir O'Doherty and Felim Riabhach McDavitt.jpg |
English: From a London news pamphlet in 1608 entitled "The Overthrow of an Irish Rebell," by ALet~.
Ireland, 1608 (after the Nine Years War) and "flight of the earls" Gaelic Lord Cahir ODoherty of Donegal rebelled against the British colonizers. Angered by the confiscation of his lands for the Plantation of Ulster, and insults by local governors, Sir Cahir and his allies sacked and burned the historic town of Derry. O'Doherty's foster-father Felim Riabhach McDavitt (Mac Daibhéid) killed the Governor, Sir George Paulet, with whom he and Cahir had repeatedly quarreled. O'Doherty was killed, and his forces routed near Kilmacrennan. The severed heads of O'Doherty (right) and McDavitt (left) were displayed on Newgate in Dublin for some time afterwards. |
