English: James Bowen and his wife Julia, sailing on White Rock Lake in the summer of 1942. Mr. Bowen was an avid member of the Corinthian Sailing Club in the early 1940’s. He designed and built several fast and beautiful sailboats in the garage of his home located on Yale Boulevard now SMU Boulevard in Dallas TX. He built the boats specifically for club sponsored racing events on White Rock Lake. Mr. Bowen as a young man learned his boat building skills in the early 1920's when he began working for the newly formed company Chris-Craft in Algonac Michigan, building their famous wooden runabouts. Mr. Bowen role at Chris-Craft was Loftsman (or marker), he had the most important and strategic position in shipyard, because he was the first worker to start the boat and make the lines from plans for the basic structure of the ship. The boat shown in the photo is Mr. Bowen's own special Lighting Class racer that was design by Sparkman & Stephens in 1938, Over 15000 have been built and more than 100 active fleets worldwide, Length: 19'0" (5.8m), Beam: 6'6" (2m), Displacement: 700 lb. (318 kg), Draft (board down): 4'11" (151.3cm), (board up): 5" (12.8cm), Mast height: 26'2" (7.9m), Sail area (main & jib)277 sq.ft.,(spinnaker)300 sq.ft., Crew (racing): 3. |
