Summary
DescriptionRoyal Birkdale Clubhouse and 18th Green. - geograph.org.uk - 888476 (cropped).jpg |
English: Royal Birkdale Clubhouse and 18th Green. This third Royal Birkdale Clubhouse was built in 1935, a typical example of the architecture of the period. The Birkdale Golf Club was formed on 30 July 1889 when nine gentlemen met at the home of Mr J C Barrett and decided to form themselves into a Club. Originally a 9 hole on Shaw Hills, land given by Mr Weld Blundell, the Club moved to the Birkdale Hills in 1897 where an 18 hole course was constructed. On the 11th of November in 1951 the club received the Royal seal of approval and the links course has become world famous, hosting The Open for the first time in 1954 and The Ryder Cup in 1965. |
