Built in 1880 as a church for the Vrije Gemeente (Free Congregation), it was converted into a music venue and a youth entertainment centre in 1968. Until the 1990s, it was the largest concert club in Amsterdam. It is often referred to as the "poptempel" ("pop temple").[1]
In 2014, Paradiso opened a smaller venue, Paradiso Noord, at the Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam-Noord.
Among the most famous acts to have played Paradiso include Adele, David Bowie, Eminem, Kanye West, Jorel, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Air (French band), Prince and The Rolling Stones.[2]
