Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central , Eastern and Southeastern Europe . It borders Ukraine to the north and east, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, Moldova to the east, and the Black Sea to the southeast. It has a predominantly continental climate , and an area of 238,397 km2 (92,046 sq mi) with a population of 19 million people (2023). Romania is the twelfth-largest country in Europe and the sixth-most populous member state of the European Union . Its capital and largest city is Bucharest , followed by Cluj-Napoca , Iași , Timișoara , Constanța , Craiova , Brașov , and Galați .
Settlement in what is now Romania began in the Lower Paleolithic followed by written records attesting the kingdom of Dacia , its conquest , and subsequent Romanisation by the Roman Empire during late antiquity . The modern Romanian state was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia . The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. During World War I , after declaring its neutrality in 1914, Romania fought together with the Allied Powers from 1916. In the aftermath of the war, Bukovina , Bessarabia , Transylvania , and parts of Banat , Crișana , and Maramureș became part of the Kingdom of Romania . In June–August 1940, as a consequence of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and Second Vienna Award , Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union and Northern Transylvania to Hungary. In November 1940, Romania signed the Tripartite Pact and, consequently, in June 1941 entered World War II on the Axis side , fighting against the Soviet Union until August 1944, when it joined the Allies and recovered Northern Transylvania. Following the war and occupation by the Red Army , Romania became a socialist republic and a member of the Warsaw Pact . After the 1989 Revolution , Romania began a transition towards democracy and a market economy .
Romania is a high-income country , with a very high Human Development Index and a highly complex economy, that is emerging to be a middle power in international affairs. Romania ranked 47th in the Global Innovation Index in 2023. Its economy ranks among the fastest growing in the European Union, being the world's 44th largest by nominal GDP , and the 36th largest by PPP. Romanian citizens enjoy one of the fastest and cheapest internet speeds in the world. Romania experienced rapid economic growth in the early 2000s; its economy is now based predominantly on services. It is a producer and net exporter of cars and electric energy through companies like Automobile Dacia and OMV Petrom . The majority of Romania's population are ethnic Romanians and religiously identify themselves as Eastern Orthodox Christians , speaking Romanian , a Romance language (more specifically Eastern Romance ). Romania is a member of the United Nations , the European Union , the Schengen Area , NATO , the Council of Europe , BSEC and WTO . (Full article... )

romanized : Banatski balgari ;
Romanian :
Bulgari bănățeni ;
Serbian :

Bulgarian Roman Catholics and
Bulgarians Paulicians or simply as
Paulicians , are a distinct
Bulgarian minority group which since the
Chiprovtsi Uprising in the late 17th century began to settle in the region of the
Banat , which was then ruled by the
Habsburgs and after
World War I was divided between
Romania ,
Serbia , and
Hungary . Unlike most other Bulgarians, they are
Roman Catholic by confession and stem from groups of
Paulicians (who eventually adopted Catholicism) and Roman Catholics from modern northern and northwestern
Bulgaria .
Banat Bulgarians speak a distinctive codified form of the Eastern Bulgarian
vernacular with much
lexical influence from the other languages of the Banat. Although strongly acculturated to the
Pannonian region (remote from Bulgaria's mainland), they have preserved their Bulgarian identity; however, they consider themselves Bulgarians among other ethnic groups but self-identify as Paulicians when compared to ethnic Bulgarians. (

Image 4 Shishman (
Bulgarian :

Bulgarian nobleman (
boyar ) who ruled a semi-independent realm based out of the
Danubian fortress of
Vidin in the late 13th and early 14th century. Shishman, who was bestowed the title of "
despot " by Bulgarian emperor
George Terter I , was a
Cuman , and may have been established as lord of Vidin as early as the 1270s.
In 1291, he came under
Golden Horde ("Tatar")
suzerainty and in 1292 he was in charge of an unsuccessful campaign against neighbouring
Serbia . Even though the Serbs captured Vidin in their counter-offensive, perhaps thanks to Tatar influence Shishman was placed once more as the ruler of the region, this time as a Serbian vassal. However, he continued to rule his lands largely independently. As his son and successor as despot of Vidin
Michael Shishman acceded to the Bulgarian throne in 1323, Shishman was the progenitor of the last medieval Bulgarian royal dynasty, the
Shishman dynasty . (

Image 5 The Battle With Torches by Romanian painter
Theodor Aman (1866)
The
night attack at Târgoviște (
Romanian :
Atacul de noapte de la Târgoviște ) was a battle fought between forces of Prince
Vlad III of
Wallachia , and Sultan
Mehmed II of the
Ottoman Empire on Thursday, 17 June 1462. The battle started after
Mehmed II , who already had tense relations with
Vlad , discovered his alliance with
Hungary 's king
Matthias Corvinus and ordered his forces to ambush him. Vlad foiled the attack and invaded
Bulgaria . In response, Mehmed raised a great army with the objective to conquer Wallachia. The two leaders fought a series of skirmishes, the most notable one being the conflict where Vlad attacked the Turkish camp in the night in an attempt to kill Mehmed. The assassination attempt failed and Mehmed marched to the Wallachian capital of
Târgoviște , where he found a few men with cannons. After leaving the capital, Mehmed discovered 23,844 impaled Turks whom Vlad had killed during his invasion of Bulgaria. The number is mentioned by Vlad himself in a letter to Matthias Corvinus. The sultan and his troops then sailed to
Brăila and burned it to the ground before retreating to
Adrianople . Mehmed's forces returned home with many captured slaves, horses, and cattle. (

Image 9 Ion Creangă (
Romanian pronunciation: [ iˈon ˈkre̯aŋɡə] ; also known as
Nică al lui Ștefan a Petrei ,
Ion Torcălău and
Ioan Ștefănescu ; March 1, 1837 – December 31, 1889) was a
Moldavian , later
Romanian writer , raconteur and
schoolteacher . A main figure in 19th-century
Romanian literature , he is best known for his
Childhood Memories volume, his
novellas and
short stories , and his many
anecdotes . Creangă's main contribution to
fantasy and
children's literature includes narratives structured around eponymous protagonists ("
Harap Alb ", "
Ivan Turbincă ", "
Dănilă Prepeleac ", "
Stan Pățitul "), as well as
fairy tales indebted to conventional forms ("
The Story of the Pig ", "
The Goat and Her Three Kids ", "
The Mother with Three Daughters-in-Law ", "
The Old Man's Daughter and the Old Woman's Daughter "). Widely seen as masterpieces of the
Romanian language and
local humor , his writings occupy the middle ground between a collection of
folkloric sources and an original contribution to a
literary realism of rural inspiration. They are accompanied by a set of contributions to
erotic literature , collectively known as his "corrosives".
A
defrocked Romanian Orthodox priest with an unconventional lifestyle, Creangă made an early impact as an innovative educator and textbook author, while pursuing a short career in
nationalist politics with the
Free and Independent Faction . His literary debut came late in life, closely following the start of his close friendship with Romania's
national poet Mihai Eminescu and their common affiliation with the influential
conservative literary society
Junimea . Although viewed with reserve by many of his colleagues there, and primarily appreciated for his records of
oral tradition , Creangă helped propagate the group's cultural guidelines in an accessible form. Later critics have often described him, alongside Eminescu,
Ion Luca Caragiale and
Ioan Slavici , as one of the most accomplished representatives of
Junimist literature. (

Hatzegopteryx ("
Hațeg basin wing") is a
genus of
azhdarchid pterosaur found in the late
Maastrichtian deposits of the
Densuş Ciula Formation , an outcropping in
Transylvania ,
Romania . It is known only from the
type species ,
Hatzegopteryx thambema , named by Buffetaut
et al. in 2002 based on parts of the skull and
humerus . Additional specimens, including a
neck vertebra , were later placed in the genus, representing a range of sizes. The largest of these remains indicate it was among the biggest pterosaurs, with an estimated wingspan of 10 to 12 metres (33 to 39
ft).
Unusually among giant azhdarchids,
Hatzegopteryx had a very wide skull bearing large muscular attachments, bones with a spongy internal texture instead of being hollow, and a short, robust, and heavily muscled neck measuring 1.5 metres (5
ft) long, which was about half the length of other azhdarchids with comparable wingspans and was capable of withstanding strong bending forces.
Hatzegopteryx inhabited
Hațeg Island , an island situated in the
Cretaceous subtropics within the prehistoric
Tethys Sea . In the absence of large
theropods ,
Hatzegopteryx was likely the
apex predator of Hațeg Island, tackling proportionally larger prey (including dwarf
titanosaurs and
iguanodontians ) than other azhdarchids. (

Image 11 Mihail Kogălniceanu (
Romanian pronunciation: [ mihaˈil koɡəlniˈtʃe̯anu] ⓘ ; also known as
Mihail Cogâlniceanu ,
Michel de Kogalnitchan ; September 6, 1817 – July 1, 1891) was a
Romanian liberal statesman, lawyer, historian and publicist; he became
Prime Minister of Romania on October 11, 1863, after the
1859 union of the
Danubian Principalities under
Domnitor Alexandru Ioan Cuza , and later served as
Foreign Minister under
Carol I . He was several times
Interior Minister under Cuza and Carol. A
polymath , Kogălniceanu was one of the most influential Romanian
intellectuals of his generation. Siding with the moderate
liberal current for most of his lifetime, he began his political career as a collaborator of
Prince Mihail Sturdza , while serving as head of the
Iași Theater and issuing several publications together with the poet
Vasile Alecsandri and the activist
Ion Ghica . After editing the highly influential magazine
Dacia Literară and serving as a professor at
Academia Mihăileană , Kogălniceanu came into conflict with the authorities over his
Romantic nationalist inaugural speech of 1843. He was the ideologue of the abortive
1848 Moldavian revolution , authoring its main document,
Dorințele partidei naționale din Moldova .
Following the
Crimean War (1853–1856), with Prince
Grigore Alexandru Ghica , Kogălniceanu was responsible for drafting legislation to
abolish Roma slavery . Together with Alecsandri, he edited the unionist magazine
Steaua Dunării , played a prominent part during the elections for the
ad hoc Divan , and successfully promoted Cuza, his lifelong friend, to the throne. Kogălniceanu advanced legislation to revoke
traditional ranks and titles , and to
secularize the property of monasteries . His efforts at
land reform resulted in a
censure vote , leading Cuza to enforce them through a
coup d'état in May 1864. However, Kogălniceanu resigned in 1865, following his own conflicts with the monarch. (

Image 12 Gabriel Báthory (
Hungarian :
Báthory Gábor ; 15 August 1589 – 27 October 1613) was
Prince of Transylvania from 1608 to 1613. Born to the
Roman Catholic branch of the
Báthory family , he was closely related to four rulers of the
Principality of Transylvania (a
vassal state of the
Ottoman Empire which had developed in the eastern territories of the medieval
Kingdom of Hungary ). His father,
Stephen Báthory , held estates in the principality, but never ruled it. Being a minor when his father died in 1601, Gabriel became the
ward of the childless
Stephen Báthory , from the
Protestant branch of the family, who converted him to
Calvinism . After inheriting most of his
guardian 's estates in 1605, Gabriel became one of the wealthiest landowners in Transylvania and
Royal Hungary (a realm of the
Habsburg Empire which included the northern and western parts of medieval Hungary).
Gabriel made an alliance with the
Hajdús —irregular troops stationing along the borders of Transylvania and Royal Hungary—and laid claim to Transylvania against the elderly prince,
Sigismund Rákóczi in February 1608. Rákóczi abdicated and the
Diet of Transylvania elected Gabriel prince without resistance. Both the
Sublime Porte and the Habsburg ruler
Matthias II acknowledged Gabriel's election. He ignored the privileges of the
Transylvanian Saxons and captured their wealthiest town, Szeben (now
Sibiu in Romania), provoking an uprising in 1610. His attempts to expand his authority over the Ottoman vassal
Wallachia and his negotiations with Matthias II outraged the Ottoman Sultan
Ahmed I . The Sultan decided to replace Gabriel with an exiled Transylvanian nobleman,
Gabriel Bethlen , and sent troops to invade the principality in August 1613. Transylvania was unable to resist and the Diet dethroned Gabriel. He was murdered by Hajdú assassins. (

Image 13 The "real-life Mitică", in a 1909 cartoon by Ion Theodorescu-Sion : his derelict home vs. his fashionable lifestyle Mitică (
Romanian pronunciation: [ miˈtikə] ) is a fictional character who appears in several
sketch stories by
Romanian writer
Ion Luca Caragiale . The character's name is a common
hypocoristic form of
Dumitru or
Dimitrie (
Romanian for
Demetrius ). He is one of the best-known figures in Caragiale's
1901 collection
Momente şi schiţe , as well as in
Romanian humor at large. Mitică is a male resident of
Bucharest whose background and status are not always clear, generally seen as an
allegory of the average Bucharester or through extension, inhabitants of Romania's southern regions—
Wallachia and
Muntenia . According to accounts, he was based on a resident of
Sinaia , whom Caragiale had befriended.
Caragiale used Mitică as a
stock character to feature in
satirical contexts; the biographical insights he provided are short and often contradict each other. Among Mitică's traits are his tendency to generate
sarcastic comebacks and sententious
catchphrases , a
Francized speech, as well as inclinations to waste time and easily find his way out of problematic situations. His existence is connected to events in the
history of Bucharest which he occasionally references in his jokes. Like
Lache and Mache , who are present in Caragiale's fiction, the character is usually portrayed as a
civil servant who has a hard time making ends meet, but who is well liked by his peers. (

Czech :
Matyáš Korvín ;

King of Hungary and
Croatia from 1458 to 1490, as
Matthias I . After conducting several military campaigns, he was elected
King of Bohemia in 1469 and adopted the title
Duke of Austria in 1487. He was the son of
John Hunyadi ,
Regent of Hungary , who died in 1456. In 1457, Matthias was imprisoned along with his older brother,
Ladislaus Hunyadi , on the orders of King
Ladislaus the Posthumous . Ladislaus Hunyadi was executed, causing a rebellion that forced King Ladislaus to flee Hungary. After the King died unexpectedly, Matthias's uncle
Michael Szilágyi persuaded the
Estates to unanimously proclaim the 14-year-old Matthias as king on 24 January 1458. He began his rule under his uncle's guardianship, but he took effective control of government within two weeks.
As king, Matthias waged wars against the Czech
mercenaries who dominated
Upper Hungary (today parts of
Slovakia and
Northern Hungary ) and against
Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor , who claimed Hungary for himself. In this period, the
Ottoman Empire conquered
Serbia and
Bosnia , terminating the zone of
buffer states along the southern frontiers of the
Kingdom of Hungary . Matthias signed a peace treaty with Frederick III in 1463, acknowledging the Emperor's right to style himself King of Hungary. The Emperor returned the
Holy Crown of Hungary with which Matthias was crowned on 29 April 1464. In this year, Matthias invaded the territories that had recently been occupied by the Ottomans and seized fortresses in Bosnia. He soon realized he could expect no substantial aid from the Christian powers and gave up his anti-Ottoman policy. (

Image 15 The logo of the Romanian Top 100, Romania's national chart until 2012. Multiple
record charts have been inaugurated in
Romania since the 1990s. The
Romanian Top 100 was the country's national chart until 2012. Founded in 1995, it was a ranking based on the compilation of charts submitted by local Romanian radio stations. The Romanian Top 100 was published weekly and was also announced during a radio show starting in 1998. Compilation of the list was first handled by Body M Production A-V, followed by
Media Forest . In the 2010s, the chart was announced during a podcast on
Kiss FM , but the broadcast ended in February 2012.
Later that month, the
Airplay 100 —which was compiled by Media Forest and also broadcast by Kiss FM—replaced the Romanian Top 100 as a national chart. Until its cancellation in November 2021, it measured the
airplay of songs on radio stations and television channels throughout the country. For a short period of time during the late 2000s and early 2010s,
Nielsen Music Control and
Uniunea Producătorilor de Fonograme din România (UPFR) jointly published airplay charts; UPFR resumed publishing charts in November 2021, in collaboration with BMAT. Media Forest has also been issuing
weekly radio and television airplay charts since 2009. In February 2022,
Billboard inaugurated
Romania Songs , a

Several theories, in great extent mutually exclusive, address the issue of the origin of the Romanians . The Romanian language descends from the Vulgar Latin dialects spoken in the Roman provinces north of the "Jireček Line " (a proposed notional line separating the predominantly Latin-speaking territories from the Greek-speaking lands in Southeastern Europe ) in Late Antiquity . The theory of Daco-Roman continuity argues that the Romanians are mainly descended from the Daco-Romans , a people developing through the cohabitation of the native Dacians and the Roman colonists in the province of Dacia Traiana (primarily in present-day Romania ) north of the river Danube . The competing immigrationist theory states that the Romanians' ethnogenesis commenced in the provinces south of the river with Romanized local populations (known as Vlachs in the Middle Ages) spreading through mountain refuges, both south to Greece and north through the Carpathian Mountains . Other theories state that the Romanized local populations were present over a wide area on both sides of the Danube and the river itself did not constitute an obstacle to permanent exchanges in both directions; according to the "admigration" theory , migrations from the Balkan Peninsula to the lands north of the Danube contributed to the survival of the Romance-speaking population in these territories.
Political motivations—the Transylvanian Romanians' efforts to achieve their emancipation, Austro-Hungarian and Romanian expansionism, and Hungarian irredentism—influenced the development of the theories, and "national passions" still color the debates. In 2013, authors of
The Cambridge History of the Romance Languages came to the conclusion that the "historical, archaeological and linguistic data available do not seem adequate to give a definitive answer" in the debate. Their view was accepted by scholars contributing to
The Oxford Guide to the Romance Languages , published in 2016, which reiterates that "the location and extent of the territory where "Daco-Romance" originated" is uncertain. (

Second Lieutenant Ecaterina Teodoroiu
Ecaterina Teodoroiu (Romanian pronunciation: [ ekateˈrina te.odoˈroju] ; formal rendition of Cătălina Toderoiu ; 15 January 1894 – 3 September 1917) was a Romanian woman who fought on the front and died in World War I , and is regarded as a heroine of Romania .
A
Romanian Scouts member, she had initially worked as a nurse but she subsequently decided to become a front-line soldier, being deeply impressed by the patriotism of the wounded and the death of her brother Nicolae, a sergeant in the
Romanian Army . It was an unusual decision for a woman of that era, so she was sent to the front rather reluctantly. However, with the support of the
Romanian royal family , she was able to serve in the military and eventually came to be seen as a symbol. (
