Shmuley Boteach's outspokenness has earned him both praise and criticism. He has been described as one of the most influential Jews in the United States and the world.[8][9][10] The Washington Post referred to him as "the most famous rabbi in America", Newsweek named him one of the 10 most influential rabbis in the United States, and The Jerusalem Post named him one of the 50 most influential Jews in the world.[11][12][13] Boteach has called himself "America's Rabbi," a position which does not actually exist.[14][15]
