Indonesian singer Anggun has recorded more than 100 songs in multiple languages, mainly Indonesian, English and French, writing many of them by herself or in collaboration with other musicians. She has released four Indonesian studio albums, five English studio albums, five French studio albums, and collaborated with other artists for duets and featured songs on other artists' albums, charity singles and soundtracks. Anggun began her recording career in Indonesia with a children's album in 1983. At the age of twelfe, she received her first songwriting credit on two songs for her debut studio album, Dunia Aku Punya (1986). However, most of Anggun's early materials in Indonesia were composed by other songwriters. She later contributed three songs on her third studio album, Anggun C. Sasmi... Lah (1993), which was produced by herself under her own record company. In 1994, Anggun left Indonesia for Europe to pursue an international career.
In 1997, Anggun released her first French studio album, Au nom de la lune, under Columbia Records. The album saw drastic change in her musical style, replacing her rock music trademark with pop and world music sounds. Anggun co-wrote three tracks on the album. The English version of the album, Snow on the Sahara, by Sony Music Entertainment in 33 countries across Asia, Europe and America. She recruited songwriter Nikki Matheson to adapt the songs to English. In 2000, Anggun released her second French album, Desirs contraires, which featured her first compositions since her international breakhtrough. She also co-wrote the entire materials for the English version of the album, Chrysalis.
