Sexiest Man Alive[lower-alpha 1] is an annual issue of the weekly American magazine People, featuring a man they deem to be the year's most sexually attractive. The inaugural issue came to fruition in 1985 when Mary Dunn, a photo editor of People, came across a photo of American actor Mel Gibson during a meeting and said: "Oh my God, he is the sexiest man alive!".[2][3] Gibson was subsequently interviewed on the set of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and graced the first-ever Sexiest Man Alive cover, published on February 4, 1985.[4] Since then, People editors have chosen 34 male celebrities for the title, predominantly actors who have garnered significant public attention through their involvement in high-profile movie releases.[5][6] The most recent holder of the title is American actor Chris Evans in 2022.

The issue was halted during 1993 and 1994. It was superseded in 1993 by the first and only Sexiest Couple Alive issue, which was dedicated to Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere.[7] In honor of the franchise's 30th anniversary, People editors selected Keanu Reeves as the 1994 winner in 2015.[7] Since 1997, the title has been annually announced in a special double issue between late November and early December.[7] American actors Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, and George Clooney are the only men to have earned the title twice.[7][lower-alpha 2] The youngest recipient was John F. Kennedy Jr., who was 27 years old when he earned the honor in 1988.[7] The following year, Sean Connery became the oldest winner at the age of 59.[7]
People magazine announced the recipients on several television shows before the annual issue's release, notably NBC's Today show.[8][9] Starting from 2013, the honorees were exclusively revealed on several talk shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2013–15, 2020, 2023),[10] The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2016),[11] The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (2018),[12] and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (2021–22).[13] American musicians Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and John Legend revealed their Sexiest Man Alive issues on The Voice, a reality competition television series they participated as coaches.[14] People magazine has celebrated the franchise by releasing various media products, including a 20th anniversary book in 2006,[15] a 2010 television special on ABC (hosted by Kim Kardashian),[16] and a 2015 television special on Lifetime.[1]
