Palestine is historically known as the Holy Land for Christians, Muslims, and Jews as well as for Samaritans, Mandaeans , and Druze. It has been ruled by various kingdoms such as the Kingdom of Israel, Babylonian, Persian Empire, Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Islamic Caliphate, Crusades, Ayyubid, Mamluk, and the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire ruled Palestine for 400 years, until World War I. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the British government established Mandatory Palestine and supported the Zionist movement, by facilitating immigrants Jews. This increased tensions between Jews and Arabs.
After WWII, the UN proposed a Partition Plan for Palestine, but a civil war ensued, and the plan was not implemented. Following Israel's establishment in 1948, neighboring Arab countries invaded, leading to the Arab-Israeli War. The All-Palestine Government was formed but had limited jurisdiction in Gaza. Palestine is recognized by 138 UN member states. In the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. In 1988, Yasser Arafat, as Chairman of the PLO, declared the establishment of the State of Palestine. Following the Oslo Accords in 1993, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) was formed to govern parts of the West Bank and Gaza. After Hamas gained power in the 2006 elections, a conflict with Fatah led to Hamas taking control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, following Israel's disengagement.
The West Bank contains 165 Palestinian enclaves that are under partial Palestinian rule, but the remainder, including 200 Israeli settlements, is under full Israeli control. Palestine's mid-year population in 2021 was 5,227,193. Gaza is the largest city in the country. Although Palestine claims Jerusalem as its capital, most of the city is under the control of Israel as a result of the 1967 war, except a few parts. Currently, the administrative center is based in Ramallah, the financial hub of Palestine. Palestine is a member of the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the G77, the International Olympic Committee, as well as UNESCO, UNCTAD , and the International Criminal Court. The country has the highest number of educated people in the entire Arab world. Palestine is believed to hold massive oil and gas reserves.
