New Jersey is a state located in the Northeastern United States. According to the 2020 census, New Jersey is the 11th most populous state with 9,288,994 inhabitants but the 4th smallest state by area, spanning 7,354.22 square miles (19,047.3 km2) of land and 1,368.36 square miles (3,544.0 km2) of water.[1] New Jersey is divided into 21 counties and contains 565 municipalities consisting of 253 boroughs, 241 townships, 52 cities, 15 towns, 3 villages and one unorganized municipality, Princeton, which isn't classified into any of the local government types in New Jersey. The 241 townships in New Jersey are classified by the Census Bureau as minor civil divisions. Like a lot of Northeastern states, New Jersey has no unincorporated land; every square foot of land in New Jersey belongs to one of the 565 municipalities.
Newark is the most populous municipality in the state with 311,549 inhabitants[2], while the least populous is Walpack Township with 7 residents[3]. The biggest municipality by land area is Hamilton Township in Atlantic County, spanning 110.895 square miles (287.22 km2) of land and 2.049 square miles (5.31 km2) of water. The smallest municipality is Shrewsbury Township with an area of 0.099 square miles (0.26 km2), all land.[4].
