Despite a poor start, collecting only nine points in the first seven matches, Milan went on to cut the lead of city rivals Internazionale to a single point with ten games left to play. However, injuries to key players and poor performances in the late games prevented the Rossoneri from completing the comeback, and they ultimately finished the league in third place. Their Champions League campaign proved no more successful, as they were knocked out in the round of 16 by Manchester United.
