גמילה היא תהליך של השתחררות מתלות בסוג כלשהו של התמכרות או הרגל, כגון גמילה מעישון או גמילה מחיתולים.
תהליך הגמילה נעשה באמצעות הפסקה מוחלטת של ההתמכרות או בירידה הדרגתית בשימוש בגורם התלות עד למצב בו האדם אינו תלוי בו יותר.
תסמיני גמילה מהתמכרות גופנית
לאחר שהגוף פיתח מנגנוני פיצוי היוצרים מצב של סבילות עבור חומר מסוים, היעדרו של החומר מפסיק את השפעתו בעוד שמנגנוני הפיצוי ממשיכים לפעול לבדם[1].
בגלל שבמצב זה מנגנוני ההומיאוסטזיס פועלים ללא התנגדות ומורגשים ביתר שאת, הפסקה מוחלטת של נטילת החומרים הממכרים עלולה לגרור אחריה תסמינים של היפוך השפעה.
תסמיני הגמילה עשויים להיות גופניים או נפשיים ובדרך כלל גופניים ונפשיים גם יחד. משך זמן הגמילה יכול להימשך בין מספר ימים ועד מעבר לשנה ותלוי בסוג הסם ובמנגנוני הפעילות שלו.
