Tylosen[2] zijn uitgroeisels van de parenchymcellen rond de xyleemvaten van sommige bedektzadige plantensoorten. Als een deel van de plant uitdroogt of als er een infectie plaatsvindt, sluiten de tylosen deze vaten af, zodat de schade zich niet verspreidt naar de rest van de plant.
In sommige boomsoorten helpen de tylosen ook om het spinthout om te zetten in kernhout door de vaten af te sluiten zodra deze vol luchtbellen raken, waardoor rotting voorkomen wordt.[3]
