A series of eight fantasy novels and one short story explores the growth, development and inner workings of the Watch. The novels generally feature Watch Commander Sam Vimes as protagonist and follow the narrative structure of a crime novel. In each story, the Watch are called on to solve a mysterious crime. In order of publication, they are:
- Guards! Guards! (1989);
- "Theatre of Cruelty" (1993) (short story)
- Men at Arms (1993);
- Feet of Clay (1996);
- Jingo (1997);
- The Fifth Elephant (1999);
- Night Watch (2002);
- Thud! (2005);
- Snuff (2011)
The Watch and its individual members also appear in separate stories in the Discworld series, especially those set in Ankh-Morpork.
The Watch was also the very loose inspiration for the 2021 fantasy police procedural television series,[1][2] The Watch. However, there is no direct link to the characters in the Discworld books. The setting and characters featured bear no resemblance to those of the books, earning the ire of the many Discworld fans – and indeed, those who value appropriate use and reference. The director was widely condemned for admitting he had not read any of the books prior to production starting.[citation needed]
