The match will feature 1. FC Kaiserslautern, a 2. Bundesliga side, and reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen are thus seeking to win a domestic double.
The winners will host the 2024 edition of the DFL-Supercup. If Kaiserslautern win, they will face Leverkusen again in the Supercup and earn automatic qualification for the league stage of the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League. But if Leverkusen win the double, the Bundesliga runners-up will take the spot and hosting right instead. Furthermore, since Leverkusen have already qualified for the 2024–25 UEFA Champions League by finishing in the Bundesliga's top four, the spot will go to the seventh-best ranked team in the league, and the league's UEFA Conference League play-off round spot will go to the eighth-placed team.[note 1][4]
