The constituency was created for the 1950 general election, when the two-seat Dundee constituency was split into two single seat constituencies: Dundee East and Dundee West.
Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, the seat will be subject to boundary changes, gaining further parts of the Dundee City council area. As a consequence, it will be renamed Dundee Central, to be first contested at the next general election.[1]
