In August 2018, he was one of thirty-three players to be awarded a central contract for the 2018–19 season by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).[2][3] In March 2019, he captained the Pakistan One Day International (ODI) team for the first time.[4] On 24 November 2023, Imad announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.[5] But on 23 March 2024, he withdraw his retirement from International cricket for 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.[6][7]
