Like Night on the Galactic Railroad before it, the characters are depicted as anthropomorphic cats based on Hiroshi Masumura's manga adaptation of the novel. It is the second animated film adaptation of the story. The previous adaptation was released in 1994 as Kyōdō Eiga Zenkoku Keiretsu Kaigi, but that one features human characters instead.[10]
North American anime distributor Sentai Filmworks have licensed the film for digital and home video release.[11]
