Common side effects include sleepiness, anxiety, confusion, and dizziness.[2] Serious side effects may include hallucinations, abuse, anaphylaxis, and suicide.[2] Use is generally not recommended together with opioids.[2] If the dose is rapidly decreased withdrawal may occur.[2] Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended.[4] Temazepam is an intermediate acting benzodiazepine and hypnotic.[2][3] It works by affecting GABA within the brain.[2]
Temazapam was patented in 1962 and came into medical use in 1969.[5] It is available as a generic medication.[6] A month supply in the United Kingdom costs the NHS about £1.40 as of 2019.[6] In the United States, the wholesale cost of this amount is about US$1.76.[7] In 2017, it was the 142nd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than four million prescriptions.[8][9]
