Through a partnership and collaboration of the National Park Service and the non-profit Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, the park offers both natural and cultural resources.

Its land was donated to the United States government by Catherine Filene Shouse, who sought to preserve her former farm as parkland. In 1966, Congress accepted Shouse's gift and authorized Wolf Trap Farm Park as the first national park for the performing arts.[3] It was given its present name on August 21, 2002.
