La société fut fondée à Eugene, dans l'Oregon et fut par la suite déplacée à San Rafael en Californie, et finalement à Novato, toujours en Californie[11]. La Brøderbund a été acheté par The Learning Company, anciennement SoftKey, en 1998[12],[13],[14].
