The 2021 Dutch general election to elect the members of the House of Representatives was set for 17 March 2021.
The Third Rutte cabinet was inaugurated after the longest coalition formation in Dutch history, with 225 days between the election and swearing in of the cabinet.
COVID-19 pandemic caused Interior Minister Kajsa Ollongren to propose spreading the election over a period of three days between 15 and 17 March 2021.[1]
The entire Dutch government, including Prime Minister Mark Rutte resigned on 15 January 2021 over the Childcare benefits scandal.[2]
